Financial Resources

A variety of financial resources are available to support the rehabilitation of historic structures in conformance with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards. These financial programs are not administered by the City of Rapid City. Historic review may be required for approval.

    Elevate Rapid City Façade Loan Program

    Elevate created a Downtown Façade Loan Program to encourage revitalization of the downtown, to stimulate additional private sector investment in the downtown and surrounding area, and to help spur job creation.

    State of South Dakota Historic Property Tax Moratorium

    An 8-year moratorium on the property tax assessment of certified improvements. Available to properties listed on the National or State Register of Historic Places.

    Deadwood Fund Grant

    Funded by a portion of the gambling revenue generated in Deadwood, South Dakota. Grants ranging from $1,000 to $25,000 given to projects that retain, restore, or rehabilitate historic buildings, structures, and archaeology sites in South Dakota for commercial, residential, or public purposes.

    Federal Tax Credits

    20% tax credit on certified expenditures when an income-producing historic structure is rehabilitated for new use.

    Outside of Deadwood Grant Program

    The Deadwood Historic Preservation Commission has helped promote the preservation and interpretation of historic sites, buildings, and properties throughout the state with the Outside-of-Deadwood Grant program. The program, which awards up to $100,000 each year, stimulates quality restoration, protection, and interpretation of buildings, sites, and properties that contribute to an understanding of Deadwood's unique history.
